About the Museum

Hunter's Bar Junior School's Year 5 students have been studying the Atlantic Slave Trade. As part of this we have been exploring the key concept 'Everyone is equal on Earth'. Prior to this, we looked at ideas relating to equality, justice and fairness including discussing the Black Lives Matter movement. We have been combining all our learning to investigate two lines of inquiry namely, 'What causes people to leave their homes?' and 'What will our impact on future Britain be?'

In our work on the Atlantic Slave Trade, which is the focus of our online Slavery Museum, we have studied the British Empire, the slave trade triangle, a slave's journey on the middle passage, the justifications for slavery and the lasting impacts of slavery which can still be felt today. Following this, we looked in depth at the culture and civilisation of Ancient Benin, producing artworks reminiscent of their bronze masks.

This museum hopes to educate people about the horrors of slavery, the importance of understanding our past and to celebrate the hard work and achievements of the Year 5 pupils at Hunter's Bar Junior School.

  1. What a great museum Year Five, you should be so proud of all your hard work on this. Learning about the slave trade is not an easy thing to do and you have been so sensitive, understanding and mature about it. Well done.
