    Fabulous work Juliette. I was very impressed with how you managed to transform what happened to the slaves into something that sounds almost benign. We know however that slavers did this so they could continue the very lucrative trade of Africans.

At last, we were half dragged onto a mammoth vessel bigger than any spindly canoe I had ever seen back at my home in Africa. I could feel the slaves I was chained to trembling as a stiff leather whip cracked my back until I was blue with bruises. I saw my mother looking agonised from the deck of a neighbouring ship. A Slave's Journey by Ilyas

Eventually, we were forced onto the majestic galleon. Fear flooded my veins. I wanted to cry and felt sick. I was chained tightly in thick, iron fetters, with my fellow slaves we tried to escape, but could not. The crew stared at us with disgust, looking ready to whip us if we didn’t follow orders. I could see the younger slaves crying after being separated from their parents. We were ordered to stand in the midday heat for what seemed like a year. After what seemed like the worst day of my life, we were    ordered to go into the hull.   As we opened the dirty, hatch and went down the rotten steps, it smelt revolting. The first thing to hit me was the smell of human skin. I was physically sick due to the unbearable heat and truly awful conditions. My heart sank. About the Museum

Hunter's Bar Junior School's Year 5 students have been studying the Atlantic Slave Trade. As part of this we have been exploring the key concept 'Everyone is equal on Earth'. Prior to this, we looked at ideas relating to equality, justice and fairness including discussing the Black Lives Matter movement. We have been combining all our learning to investigate two lines of inquiry namely, 'What causes people to leave their homes?' and 'What will our impact on future Britain be?' In our work on the Atlantic Slave Trade, which is the focus of our online Slavery Museum, we have studied the British Empire, the slave trade triangle, a slave's journey on the middle passage, the justifications for slavery and the lasting impacts of slavery which can still be felt today. Following this, we looked in depth at the culture and civilisation of Ancient Benin, producing artworks reminiscent of their bronze masks.  This museum hopes to educate people about the ho...
