A Slave's Journey by Suhana
Miserably, we were forcefully marched onto the looming vessel, as we hobbled across the deck the crew glared at us with darkening eyes pulling a despicable face of disgust. Sweat trickled down my bare back, tears flooded my weary eyes until I gave in they rolled down my cheek leaving it damp, my heart was heavy. We were chained with jagged chains that sunk into my wrists and ankles we were left at our post our shadows reflecting my misery. The crew smirked as we had no possessions except our clothes. Some of my fellow slaves could not escape their depression for they wept helplessly. I saw the African mid-day sun fade and turn to the evening where the moon rose. One of the members of the crew tripped me up causing the rest to fall like dominos we staggered up and headed below deck.
Carefully, our timid legs scuttled down the noisy wooden stairs. From the cool summer weather came a spine chilling gale. Below deck was lit by a beautiful starry sky it revealed faces of sorrow and human excesses. My throat attempted to eject what I saw, but I wouldn’t give in. Slowly, I laid my body against the splintered floor. Once again the chains lowered my wrists against the harsh splintered floor my eyes began to close but sleep would not come. Leaving my eyes coloured a scarlet red. As the evening faded away it turned to the darkest midnight of my life, as I stared through a distant crack I saw my home disappear into the darkness.
The majestic ship attacked the waves retreating to the
ships glory. The space wandered across the deck. I felt a tear overpower my
eyes as my worries reformed. Would I ever go home? What would my family think?
These thoughts remained swaying in my head. My eyes from a scarlet red were a
blood-shot red. The crew were drunk partying for their future money. I wished
that I was deaf. My ears repeated a continuous ringing. My mouth was dry my tongue
acted like a sponge sucking all the moisture out.
